The Short Bus
I am reading The Short Bus by Jonathan Mooney for my literature circle. I actually found this book to be pretty interesting to read, but very appalling. I think it was a great idea for an adult with special needs to travel across the country to interview other special needs individuals. I found it very hard to imagine special education kids actually being treated the way they describe in the book. It makes me think back to my high school where we had many special needs students. They had their own classroom, but integrated with the rest of the students for lunch and things like chorus. There was a best buddies club at my high school where kids would interact with the special needs kids and play games, do crafts, and just hang out with them. The teachers and students at my school were very polite to the special education kids. One of the kids with Asperger's won homecoming king and a kid with down syndrome won prom king because we were taught to be accepting at our school. This is why it was so hard to me to even think about those children being so mistreated by their teachers. Everyone is so quick to judge them and think that there is something wrong with them, but they can't help it and they should be respected and treated with equality like any other student.
